Dr. Jason Tam sees patients out of our Markham, Scarborough, and Downtown offices.
Our Unionville orthodontist was born and raised in Toronto and lived in Markham before moving to Richmond Hill. A Chinese orthodontist, fluent in both English and Cantonese, with an understanding of Mandarin, he is one of the most highly respected doctors in Canada. For Invisalign in Toronto, he teaches Invisalign® internationally to dentists and orthodontists, and has lectured to the dental hygiene students and hygienists at George Brown College.
Dr. Tam is familiar with the University of Toronto environment, having attended high school at the University of Toronto Schools, where he established the MCO Orthodontics UTS Community Builder Award and interviews prospective students. He completed his Bachelor of Science with high distinction, followed by a Doctorate of Dental Surgery with honours.
During his dental training, Dr. Tam was extremely active on campus as a residence don for four years. He received several honours as the dental school president and valedictorian. He was also awarded the Canadian Dental Association President’s Award, was inducted into the prestigious Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honour Society, received the Xi Psi Phi Dental Fraternity Award, and the J.G. Bourassa Cup as the most outstanding member of the graduating class.
Following 13 years in the U of T system, Dr. Tam decided to venture outside of Canada as a general dentist at the New York Hospital Medical Centre of Queens, part of Cornell’s Weill Medical College. There he provided care to many patients with special needs and worked closely with oral surgeons on several operating-room cases. He also spent one month providing dental care to Canada’s native people in small communities in Nunavut.
After a year in New York, Dr. Tam moved to Boston for the orthodontic residency program at Boston University. He feels extremely fortunate to have studied under the tutelage of the late Dr. Anthony Gianelly, the founder of the bi-dimensional orthodontic technique. During his residency, Dr. Tam worked extensively with and was certified in Invisalign, the placement and use of orthodontic mini-implants, and extremely complicated malocclusions, including patients who require orthognathic surgery in conjunction with orthodontics. He completed his American boards and is fully eligible to practice orthodontics in the United States.
Realizing what was truly important to him, Dr. Tam decided to return to the GTA for his family and friends. After successfully completing the two-day examination, he was admitted as a Fellow in the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, which certified him as an orthodontic specialist for children and adults. Dr. Tam feels grateful to be able to give back to the local community and sponsors a number of sports teams such as the Markham Waxers, Stouffville Clippers, Unionville Minor Softball Association, Unionville Skating Club, Whitchurch-Stouffville Soccer Club, Oshawa Kicks Soccer Club, and Markham Bears Ringette. He also supports the CCYAA, Markham Food Bank, Stouffville Christian School, the Rotary Club of Uxbridge, Oshawa Food Bank, Stouffville Foodbank, and Markham Stouffville Hospital.
Dr. Tam is happily married to his wife, Amelia. They are blessed with two sons and a daughter — Isaac, Ian, and Christine — so Dr. Tam understands what it is like to be a father and husband. In his leisure time, as you can tell, the family enjoys traveling, and they have been to Asia, Europe, and all over the United States and Canada for both personal pleasure and continuing orthodontic education. Dr. Tam enjoys working out, is a huge basketball fan, and loves spending time with his family. He is extremely happy to have established such vibrant, landmark offices in York Region, Durham Region, and Toronto, and looks forward to helping you discover your MCO smile!
